Assessment of the condition and safety of the Tono and Vea dams, including spillway and chute capacities and downstream flooding scenarios up to the 1000-year flood.

The challenge

Ageing dams pose safety risks that grow with the severity of the floods they may face, and the Tono and Vea dams in the Upper East Region required a thorough condition and safety assessment. Understanding their capacity to pass extreme floods was essential to protecting downstream communities.

Our approach

As Hydrologist and Hydraulics Engineer, Rev. Prof. Ing. Eric Antwi Ofosu assessed the condition of the Tono and Vea dams, examining spillway and chute capacities, leakages and cracks.

He analysed downstream flooding scenarios up to the 1000-year flood, testing how the structures would perform under extreme hydrological loading.

Outcomes

The assessment characterised the safety condition of the Tono and Vea dams and their capacity to pass floods up to the 1000-year event.

The findings on spillway capacity, leakages and downstream flooding inform decisions on the safe operation of the dams.
