Tain River Hydro–Solar Hybrid Power Project

Tain River Hydro–Solar Hybrid Power Project

EnergyTABCON Energy (with support from the German Government)Tain River, Bono Region, Ghana2022

Pre-feasibility and feasibility studies for an 8 MW run-of-river hydropower plant and a 60 MW solar PV array on the Tain River — a hybrid renewable system advanced toward a power-purchase agreement with Bui Power.

The challenge

TABCON Energy set out to develop eco-tourism and value-added agriculture in the Wenchi area of Ghana, anchored by a reliable, low-carbon energy supply. Realising this vision required a technically credible, bankable assessment of a hybrid system combining hydropower on the Tain River with utility-scale solar PV.

Developing the hybrid plant called for an integrated resource assessment, robust techno-economic analysis, and a feasibility case strong enough to secure an off-taker and attract financing.

Our approach

A UENR technical team, led by Rev. Prof. Ing. Eric Antwi Ofosu, carried out the hydrological and solar resource assessments and prepared the pre-feasibility study covering both the hydropower and solar components. Dr Felix Amankwah Diawuo led the techno-economic pre-feasibility and feasibility analysis of the hybridised hydro–solar system.

The studies sized an 8 MW hydropower plant alongside a 60 MW solar PV array, modelling generation profiles, the complementarity between the two resources, and the commercial case for a long-term power-purchase agreement.

Outcomes

The team delivered a pre-feasibility report integrating the hydropower and solar components and presented it to Bui Power, which expressed interest in signing a power-purchase agreement for the project.

The work positioned the Tain hybrid scheme as an investment-ready renewable energy project and a template for combining hydro and solar generation to deliver firm, low-carbon power in Ghana.
