Kejetia Central Market Redevelopment — Drainage Engineering

Kejetia Central Market Redevelopment — Drainage Engineering

Water ResourcesAvangaarde ConsultKumasi, Ghana2019

Review and simulation of drainage designs and Subin Basin hydrological investigations for the Kejetia Central Market redevelopment to assess flooding risk.

The challenge

Large market redevelopments alter surface run-off and can raise flooding risk within the surrounding basin. The drainage designs and hydrological assumptions for the Kejetia Central Market redevelopment needed independent scrutiny to confirm they addressed this risk.

Our approach

As Drainage Engineer, Rev. Prof. Ing. Eric Antwi Ofosu reviewed and simulated the contractor's drainage designs and the Subin Basin hydrological investigations to assess the flooding levels arising from the redevelopment.

He also reviewed the environmental impact report accompanying the scheme, considering its findings alongside the drainage assessment.

Outcomes

The review provided an independent assessment of the redevelopment's drainage designs and the flooding levels they would generate within the Subin Basin.

The findings gave the project a clearer understanding of the hydrological and environmental implications of the market redevelopment.
