Part of a four-member system-dynamics modelling team that worked with stakeholders across the Kavango–Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area to model the humans–wildlife–resources nexus, developing a water model to inform transboundary conservation decisions.

The challenge

The Kavango–Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area spans five southern African countries, where the needs of people, wildlife and natural resources are deeply intertwined. Managing this shared landscape requires tools that can capture those interdependencies across national borders.

Our approach

As modelling consultant, Dr Benjamin Batinge worked within a four-member system-dynamics modelling team, engaging stakeholders from Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe on the humans, wildlife and resources nexus.

He developed a water model as part of the integrated system-dynamics analysis of the transfrontier conservation area.

Outcomes

The work produced a stakeholder-informed model of the water and resource dynamics underpinning the Kavango–Zambezi landscape.

It gave conservation partners a shared analytical basis for balancing human needs, wildlife and natural resources across the five-country area.
