Energy Security in Poor Urban Communities: South Africa Energy-Economy Model
Research into energy security in poor urban communities and development of an integrated energy-economy system dynamics model for South Africa.
The challenge
Poor urban communities in South Africa face persistent energy insecurity, and understanding how energy access interacts with the wider economy requires tools capable of capturing those dynamics over time. A modelling approach was needed to make these interactions visible to decision-makers.
Our approach
As Postdoctoral Researcher, Dr Benjamin Batinge researched energy security in poor urban communities and developed an integrated energy-economy system dynamics model for South Africa, linking energy access to broader economic behaviour.
Outcomes
The work produced an integrated energy-economy system dynamics model for South Africa alongside research findings on energy security in poor urban communities, offering a basis for analysing energy access and its economic effects.
