
Continental Water Accounting & Hydrological Modelling
Continental-scale water accounting and hydrological modelling for IWMI — processing Africa-wide datasets, running the VegET model and building WA+ water accounts to turn hydrological data into decision-ready products, alongside capacity-building workshops in Ghana and Ethiopia.
The challenge
Sound river-basin management across Africa depends on credible, comparable water-accounting data — yet generating it at continental scale, and building the institutional capacity to sustain it, remains a major challenge for governments and basin authorities.
Our approach
As Research Consultant in IWMI’s West Africa Office, Romeo Tweneboah-Koduah processed continent-wide NDVI, land-cover, precipitation, PET and evapotranspiration datasets and ran the VegET model for baseline and future climate scenarios across Africa, generating future discharge data and developing WA+ water accounts at continental and basin scales, including data sheets for Burkina Faso and Lake Chad.
He validated VegDischarge v2 against observed records using NSE, KGE, RMSE and correlation statistics, drafted the validation report and technical note, and designed training materials and reproducible workflows — facilitating VegET–mizuRoute and WA+ capacity-building workshops in Ghana and Ethiopia.
Outcomes
The work produced validated continental water accounts, maps and basin-level visual outputs that translated hydrological findings into decision-ready products for government and development-partner audiences.
Accompanying training materials and workshops strengthened the capacity of partner-country institutions to run water-accounting analysis independently.
