
Climate–Land–Energy–Water Nexus Planning (EPIC Africa)
Building advanced, spatially contextualised water–energy–food models for long-term infrastructure planning in the Volta and Tana basins, while training a network of African experts to sustain them.
The challenge
Long-term infrastructure planning in Africa must reconcile competing demands on water, energy and food systems under deep climate and socio-economic uncertainty. Until recently the continent has lacked both the contextualised water–energy–food (WEF) models and the network of local experts needed to use and sustain them.
Our approach
EPIC Africa created a network of African experts to train, co-create and sustain WEF analysis tools over the long term. As technical consultant, Dr Felix Amankwah Diawuo contributed to building advanced, spatially contextualised WEF models using the Volta and Tana basins as case studies.
The operational WEF models were used to test and verify cost-optimised infrastructure investment plans under a range of climate and socio-economic scenarios.
Outcomes
The project delivered nexus-based planning tools capable of stress-testing infrastructure investment decisions against future climate and development scenarios.
By embedding the models within a network of trained African experts, EPIC Africa helped ensure the analytical capacity endures beyond the life of the project.
