The challenge

More frequent heavy-rain episodes pose a growing risk to major hydropower infrastructure, and safeguarding the Akosombo and Kpong stations requires a robust understanding of how the Volta Basin's hydrology is likely to change under a shifting climate.

Our approach

As Technical Officer for Hydrological Modelling, Ransford Wusah Bakuri developed, calibrated and validated a SWAT model of the Volta Basin.

The model was built to support a dam-safety climate-change risk assessment aimed at protecting the Akosombo and Kpong stations against more frequent heavy-rain episodes.

Outcomes

The calibrated and validated SWAT model provided the hydrological basis for the dam-safety climate-change risk assessment.

The assessment supports efforts to safeguard the Akosombo and Kpong generating stations against increasingly frequent heavy-rain episodes.
